Digging Inquiries

Do you dig in my area?

We are based in Mississauga, Ontario but we cover most of the GTA (excluding downtown Toronto) and then some! From Niagara to Georgetown to Ajax, and everywhere in between, we’ve got your digging needs covered. Looking for post hole digging near me? Check out our service map here.  If your town isn’t on the list, hit us up – it doesn’t hurt to ask and you might be surprised how far we’ll go for you!

Do you dig on residential or commercial properties?

Yep, we work with everyone – from small residential backyard jobs to big commercial projects. No job’s too big or small for us!

How long does it take to complete a project?

Project timelines can vary depending on the job’s size and how complex it is. We’ll give you a rough timeframe when we’re quoting, and we always aim to meet those deadlines.

What kind of equipment do you use to dig holes?

We use mini skid steers with rubber tracks for digging, they’re designed to fit through gates that are at least 34 inches wide and are easier on the lawn than the wheeled ones.

Do you use two-man augers for tight spots?

We don’t use two or one-man augers in tight spots, because safety is our priority, and they’re not always the best for tough conditions like hard ground or roots.

Our mini skid steers are pretty compact, needing just 34 inches of space (less than 3 feet!). We usually fit through most gates, but if you have a tricky situation, just give us a shout!

Give us a call at (905) 497-4653, and we’ll see what we can do.

What's the alternative for digging in tight spots?

When mini skid steer machines just won’t fit, we offer manual digging with shovels and pry bars. The cost depends on how tough the digging is and what the project needs.

Will your equipment harm my lawn?

Our equipment has rubber tracks, so it’s designed to be easy on your lawn. It weighs over 1,500 lbs, but it’s usually safe, as long as the ground isn’t too wet or muddy. If you’re worried about your lawn, just let us know ahead of time.

How deep should post holes be?

For standard fences (up to 7 feet), we dig post holes 3 1/2 feet deep to avoid frost heave, which is a big deal here in southern Ontario. Taller fences need wider, deeper holes to stay put. For decks, pergolas, gazebos, and anything else that needs serious support, we put footings in at least 4 feet down, or even deeper depending on the project. If you want the nitty-gritty on post and pier depths around here, check out our blogs: Understanding Fence Post Depths and Understanding Deck Footing Depths.

Can I start building right away?

We usually say to wait 24-48 hours (depending on the weather) before building a fence. For footings, we recommend waiting 48-72 hours (longer if it’s cold). Our pros will check things out on-site and might adjust the wait time. If you need things done fast, we can use quick-setting concrete for an extra cost, getting you built in as little as 3 hours. Just let us know when you book so we can get everything set up!

Do you offer fence post removal and fence repair services?

Yeah, we can fix up your fence! Our repair service helps extend its life without a total rebuild. We’ll dig out the old posts and concrete, redo the holes the right way, and put in new posts with fresh concrete. We can also take off and rehang your fence panels and gates. It’s a budget-friendly way to make your fence stronger with long-lasting posts, so you can put off a full replacement and keep it solid. Plus, you won’t need new holes when you do want to rebuild. Save some cash and time while keeping your fence in good shape. Give us a call for a quote: (905) 497-4653

Yes, we’ve got Liability and Commercial Vehicle Insurance covered, plus we’re registered with WSIB (Workers Safety Insurance Board) and have Class A (Restricted) Driver’s Licenses. We’re also registered with CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registrant) and are good to go as HST registrants. And with 18 years of construction experience under our belts, you can trust your project is in good hands.

Still Have Questions

The Scoop On Locates

What is Ontario 1 Call , and why is a Locate required for digging?

Ontario 1 Call locates underground utilities for safety. It’s a legal requirement for digging in Ontario. Locate requests help identify and mark gas, oil, power, phone, internet, water, and sewer lines. You need a response document from them before digging. We always check with them to ensure safe digging and avoid damage. Note: Ontario 1 Call doesn’t cover private lines (propane, pools, septic). Call us at (905) 497-4653 for a recommendation for private locator services.

How do I request a Locate?

We make things easy – you don’t even have to call Ontario 1 Call! We take care of everything, from getting the Locate Order done online to following up with Ontario One Call to make sure everything is on track for your appointment.

How long does it take for a Locate to be completed?

Ontario 1 Call usually gets locates done within 5 business days. But keep in mind, things can get backed up during the busy summer months (June to August). So, it’s a good idea to plan your project timeline with that in mind so you don’t run into any issues.

How long are Locates valid for?

Locates are typically valid for 60 days from the date they’re completed. If your project extends past this period or paint markings fade, a new locate needs to be requested.

Do I need Locates if I'm replacing an existing fence or re-using existing holes?

Yes, you still need locates, even if you’re just swapping out an old fence or using the same holes. Underground utilities can shift, or new lines get put in without your knowledge. Plus, locate clearance letters are only valid for 60 days. Getting current locates keeps everyone safe, avoids any mess-ups, and makes sure we’re following the rules.

Do I need Locates if the digging is only in the backyard?

Yep, you need a locate even for your backyard. Utilities could be anywhere on your property, so it’s important for safety and to follow the rules – get a locate done before you dig.

Permits & Property Lines

Do I need a building permit for my fence project?

Nope, you don’t need a building permit for a fence. But, you should check with your local city hall about height and front yard rules.

Do I need a building permit for my deck project?

Since every town/city has its own rules, it’s best to check with your local building department or a contractor about deck permits to make sure you’re doing things right.   Generally speaking, if a deck is 24 inches (or less) above grade, a permit is not required.

How should I determine the starting and ending points for my fence?

To determine your fence’s start and end points, check registered land survey records for accurate property boundary details. Find them online at: Land Survey Records, through your realtor, or at your town hall. This ensures correct placement and avoids neighbor issues. Want more info? What are the payment terms for your digging-related services?

Booking a digging appointment is free, and you only pay when we’re done. To make things easy, our guys have payment terminals that take cash, all major cards, or debit cards. You’ll get a receipt right away.

How do I arrange building services with The Post Hole Company?
